The topic of my paper is going to be the negative effects of the minimum wage. This research topic is significant because it pertains to and helps explain one of the main problems the country is currently facing. The issues with choosing this topic is making sure I have a long enough argument to take up ten pages without going off topic. I can help solve this by doing thorough research and having a good outline and game plan. I will introduce it by beginning to discuss the economy. The current state of the economy is one of the biggest issues facing our nation. One of the major components of the economy is wages, particularly the minimum wage. With a struggling economy most people believe that an increase to the minimum wage can help turn things around. It is not that simple, there are many factors involved. Designed to reduce poverty, a high minimum wage is detrimental to the economy. The negative effects of a mandated high rate of pay are felt throughout the economy with decreases in hiring, increases in inflation, and a heavy reliance on government programs. I will then conclude my paper with similar thoughts to those in my introduction. The conclusion will also include summing up the facts and points I have made throughout the paper. While the minimum wage may seem helpful, it actually hurts those whom it is intended to help. When the price of labor goes up, hiring of employees decreases. This raising of wages also leads to inflation which is not healthy for the economy. Unemployment and inflation lead forces people to accept help from the government. The effort of the government to support those in need puts a further strain on the economy. Although it will not single handedly ruin the economy, a high minimum wage is a cycle that continues to pull the economy downward. My main points in this paper will be the decrease in hiring that occurs, the increase in high school dropout rate, the increase in inflation, the increase in the underground economy and the reliance on the government, all because of a high minimum wage. I will also use a piece of visual rhetoric to help support my case.

Good topic. Be sure to do some deep research to find some really strong points and statistics that support your ideas. Try to find specific examples of how minimum wage affects people. Good job.
ReplyDeleteSpecific examples would be great, Will, to extend Brandon's paper. Also, a deep discussion of the visual rhetoric and how it supports your paper could give you two or three pages.
