Turns out my thesis was more of a proposal. So my proposal is nothing new, but the thesis is.
Topic: A Liberal Argument Against Abortion
Thesis: Though a stance against abortion is traditionally considered conservative, it is actually more consistent with a liberal viewpoint in favor of equality and human rights.
Proposal: Pro-life advocates are generally assumed to be conservative in the rest of their views. However, in the history of abortion, there have been many pro-life people who were considered liberal, and there is a growing movement of pro-life liberalism today. In America, democrats are generally in favor of human rights and protection of the disadvantaged, for example in the cases of helping the poor, disabled, and unemployed, and it would seem that protection of the unborn would follow.
Points:
-Human rights: right to choose vs. right to life
-Equality: History of women's rights
-History of attitudes toward abortion
-History of liberalism-analogies of abortion to other issues: war, poverty, death penalty, etc.
-Current views on each
-Lack of knowledge about process of abortion
-future direction of opinion
Conclusion: Pro-life advocacy being considered a conservative viewpoint is a result of a complex history of abortion, liberalism, and women's rights, but being pro-choice is inconsistent with other liberal stances on human rights and equality. The view persists because of the inertia of partisan politics, but recent movements suggest it may shift direction in the future.

This seems a little strange to me because I thought liberals gave the pity to the "poor, young woman that made a mistake." I think this is a tricky topic. Look out.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little confused. So you're not arguing for or against abortion...you're arguing what viewpoint Liberals have? Maybe try to provide more information and evidence in your introduction that will really show where your paper is going.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment's above. I am very confused about which point you are arguing for. You are going to have to have lots of evidence to back this one up.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you Ben. Good proposal. Hopefully, your outline will clear up any confusion.

Thank you for the positive comment, Candace. I was afraid no one knew what I was talking about. Perhaps I didn't do a very good job of explaining. It's not something people hear about much. I'll try to do better in the outline.
