Proposal

Hey guys this is probably not a great proposal, but I missed class the day Candace went over all this so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Proposal: Stem cells draws up mainy various conclusions in the minds of pro-life or pro-choice activists. Recent research has given new life to once so heated debate. My proposal is to show that the new studies and discoveries of new methods of manipulating various stem cells, will ultimately benifit the world. Now that there is a new President, new funding for research will become more available because of the differing view that democrats and republicans have. I chose this topic for two reasons; first I find it to be an important issue because the possiblities that it poses are astronomical, and second because it is a topic I have always found myself passionate about. I don't have exact facts and numbers at this particular moment, but past research that I have done has shown that stem cells has been proven to help with diseases.

Intro: Stem cell's changed the face of medicine when they first became an issue in the world. They allowed for possibilities beyond mans wildest imaginations. They provided hope for those with disease such as; Alzhimers, Parkinsons, and Diabetes. Most issues of debate come from the ethical debate on whether embryonic stem cells should be used or not since they involve the destruction of embryo.

Main Points:
*Pluripotent cells from umbilicol cord blood as a new source of stem cells.
*The benefits on specific diseases.
*Pro-life vs. Pro-choice.
*the use of embryonic cells of already aborted fetis's.

Conclusion: The new research that shows that there is less need for embryonic stem cells allows for new openings and more support of stem cells. Scientists have found that pluripotent cells from umbilicol cord blood can have the similar benefits of embryonic stem cells. Thanks to the new research found much of the ethical debate that has been centered around stem cell research can be pushed to the side. Since there is now less need for embryonic stem cells more funding should be provided to help find the cures for these diseases that are plaquing societies across the world.

Sources: I don't have my sources right now most of the information that I have is simple, but also imformation that I have learned over my years of researching stem cells.

  1. Since you missed class, you might want to look in your DK Handbook on p. 98. It talks about drafting research proposals. In your intro, change "stem cell's" to "stem cells," and take out the semicolon since "Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Diabetes" is not an independent clause. Otherwise, interesting topic! Your proposal sounds good!

  2. I was just wondering what kind of points you would be making in your pro-life/ pro-choice argument about stem cell research. Also I think it would be a good idea to force the reader to think about what they would do if their child had a disease that could be cured using stem cell research.

  3. This is a really good topic however are you going to talk about all of the ways stem cells are obtained? or just embryonic and umbilical cords. Talking about prolife and prochoice will tie in well with your paper.

  4. interesting topic, you should include both sides of the argument eventhough i know you support stem cell research. by including the other side your paper seems less bias

  5. Atha, don't think about your argument in sides (pro and con, for and against). Think about it as a star. There are many different "sides" to a star. Not everything can be solved in for or against terms.
