Topic: My research topic is how magazines and advertisements portray women and how this portrayal affects the average American woman.
Thesis: Through magazines and advertisements, women get the perception of how they are supposed to look. This unrealistic form of beauty drives women to go to extremes to look "perfect." These extremes include surgery and eating disorders and often give women a low self confidence.

I think this topic is really good. It was good that you defined what you meant by extremes. Just for some "constructive criticism," though, I was thinking it might be better to say low self esteem instead of confidence. Also, may need to be more specific about what magazines and articles, like "clothing ads" or "perfume ads." Just suggestions though! I really think you picked a great topic!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really good topic. I think that you should try to narrow down your thesis and maybe include some examples so it shows readers what you are talking about. Good choice though, I think you will be able to find a lot of articles that will back your point up!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the previous comments. One way that you can narrow your topic is by choosing either magazines or advertisements, not both. Then choose a particular magazine, type of advertisement, brand of advertisement, etc. For example, your whole paper could be about analyzing the visual rhetoric of different American Eagle ads.
ReplyDeleteYour psychoanalysis is secondary. I'm not sure how you want to organize your paper, but from what you've posted, it seems like you will be using the cause and effect rhetorical strategy to make a logical appeal. The cause is the ads;the effect is the psychoanalysis. So it seems that you will use the psychoanalysis to conclude the arguments that you make in your paper.
